NOONBARRA WORKING KELPIE STUD

BREEDING WITH
OUR STUD KELPIE SIRES

Currently, we have a number of excellent Stud Kelpie males available to outside bitches. Most of these sires are very well linebred at Noonbarra for many generations and their breeding is extremely hard to get today. They have multiple infusions of famous Rockybar, Liscannor and the great old Kalari bloodlines, especially Kalari Basil. We are proud to say we have a higher percentage of the great old Kalari bloodlines than any other Stud in Australia today.

These sires have produced 100% workers that are very keen with some outstanding qualities. Every pup has been a worker. That is a statement that very few, if any, other Stud can offer. In the last 20 years or more we have never had a single failure. That is an amazing track record and attests to the quality of these sires.

Please go to bottom of page for general information on using our sires, procedure, pricing etc.

NOONBARRA BEN VIII

(Noonbarra Jackaroo X Kamileroy Queen) - Black and Tan

Born: 15th June 2008. Stud Registration Number: 51898 Tattoo: NO53B

Noonbarra Ben is one of our young sires. He is himself sired by Jackaroo and holds a lot of his excellent traits. His dam, Queen is an exceptional dog and very versatile. Ben is a lovely dog in every way. He is very uncomplicated and very stable in his temperament and work.

He is a nice sized dog, not too heavy or tall but definitely not small either. Two of his brothers are working in sheep dog trials and have been offered very high prices. Started on sheep as a pup naturally with no commands. Nice point of balance and good power.

The best feature of Noonbarra Ben in our opinion is his great nature. He is a happy, gentle natured dog that is a delight to have around as a companion dog. Good in the house and loves a pat.

Price of service by Noonbarra Ben is just - $450.

(If boarding is needed it is priced separately at just $10 a day. Some customers prefer to pay out for a progesterone test at the Vet and the mating is usually done within 30 minutes. [See info below] So we have kept the cost of the service down but added boarding for those who prefer to leave their dog here during their on -heat period)

If service results in no pups we give a second service free providing that we are informed one week prior to expected whelping date.

NOONBARRA JACKAROO

(Noonbarra Max X Noonbarra Lizzie) - Red (Brown) and Tan
Born: 20th May 2003  Stud Registration Number: 44728 Tattoo: NO39G

Jackaroo has been the most outstanding sire we have had in 30 years!
Over many different females, including outside breeding, he has already proven himself to be an exceptional sire and has produced a number of outstanding puppies.

This  sire is another sensational Kelpie by Noonbarra Max. His grandsire on one side is Noonbarra Dusty III and his great grandsire on the other side is also Dusty. You are bringing in more Kalari Basil blood than any other Kelpie in Australia today. That means you have a beautifully linebred male that has carried many outstanding traits from generation to generation so that they are now stable and well set into the lines.

Jackaroo is very athletic looking and a little bigger than Noonbarra Max and a little smaller than Ben or Ned. A good medium sized dog. He has beautiful movement and is one of the few sires in Australia to be Hip Dysplasia tested and passed very easily. Only a handful of Kelpie sires in Australia have undergone this expensive testing. (We do it with a lot of our sires and many of our females as well.

His working ability is incredible. He has a wonderful point of balance on a mob, very good distance, break-out and walk-in strength. One of the traits customers often talk about is his footwork and cover (blocking) of the sheep. In the yards he is backing and handling the sheep very well. He has a good bark when needed but not too much. Good power when required to handle the hardest sheep.

Although his working ability is exceptional, that is not the only reason we like him. He is such an easy dog to train and is so very faithful and obedient. He has a lovely personality and loves people. He has been a great companion dog for Stephen and is very affectionate. His calmness and easy going nature makes him an ideal dog to travel with. When he was younger, he did a photo shoot with the well known TV personality, Dr. Harry Cooper and the whole crew were very taken by his behaviour and personality as well as how obedient he was. They all wanted a dog like Jackaroo. He is a very impressive dog in every way.

Price of Service to Noonbarra Jackaroo is - $600 (Australian Dollars)

(If boarding is needed it is priced separately at just $10 a day. Some customers prefer to pay out for a progesterone test at the Vet and the mating can sometimes be done within 30 minutes. [See info below] So we have kept the cost of the service down but added boarding for those who prefer to leave their dog here during their on -heat period)

AMEROO NED
(Capree Twistie X Moonshine Queen) Red (Brown) & Tan

Born: 26th April 2008. Stud Registration Number: 50861 Tattoo: JTF7B

Ameroo Ned is an excellent sire and a wonderful dog in every way. We are using him ourselves quite a bit as a sire and have kept one of his recent female pups in the Stud. We also intend very soon to keep a future young sire from him.

He has a good build, and is probably our biggest Kelpie but he is still not too heavy or course in any way.  Only a handful of Kelpie sires in Australia have undergone this expensive testing. (We do it with a lot of our sires and many of our females as well. He is quite a tall dog with good bone, not too heavy. Dusty has big ears and medium coat.

His work in the open field is also excellent with good anticipation and footwork, always holding the sheep in position. Superb distance and a very steady walk-up. Ned has always been an easy dog to have around, right from a puppy. He is an obedient dog that is easy to handle and a very devoted dog. Customers have been very pleased with his puppies.

Price of Service to Ameroo Ned is - $500 (Australian Dollars)

(If boarding is needed it is priced separately at just $10 a day. Some customers prefer to pay out for a progesterone test at the Vet and the mating is usually done within 30 minutes. [See info below] So we have kept the cost of the service down but added boarding for those who prefer to leave their dog here during their on -heat period)

If service (naturally) to your bitch  results in no pups, we give a second service free providing that we are informed one week prior to expected whelping date.

NOONBARRA MAX

(Noonbarra Dusty X Noonbarra Lucy II) - Red (Brown) and Tan

Born: 16th March 2001. Stud Tattoo NO1E Registration: 40465  FROZEN SEMEN ONLY ... $650

NOONBARRA MAXWe think that Noonbarra Max is one of the best sires we have produced and he has given us many outstanding Kelpies in the past.  He was extremely impressive working sheep even as a young puppy. He is a much smaller build than Flash or Dusty and has a great temperament that is similar to Noonbarra Tim, his great grandfather. To us, this is extremely important. He is outgoing and friendly with strangers, other dogs and children. He has small ears in contrast to Dusty or Flash, so perfect for mating over big eared bitches. He is one of the few sires in Australia to be Hip Dysplasia tested and he passed with flying colours. One of the easiest dogs we have ever had to handle. Very gentle.

He was always very well behaved and could be left in the house unsupervised at just 12 weeks of age. He is very easy to train and wants to please. He is also very faithful and will come on command and likes to be close. These traits came down from Noonbarra Gabe and Noonbarra Dusty III.

He was mostly  worked in the paddock where he has a lovely walk-in with lots of style. He has a lot of holding ability which is getting harder to find in Kelpies these days. He balances well and allows sheep to settle. He also works well on cattle. He has had limited experience in the yards but backs very well and comes through sheep in a similar manner to his sire, Noonbarra Dusty III. His sister, Noonbarra Emma works in the Snowy Mountains and with experience is now such a good backer she now backs cattle along the races.

He is, and always has been a dog that can be very calm when nothing is happening and usually just lies down and goes to sleep but is always ready to go when needed. A very affectionate and biddable dog. He started working sheep at 11 weeks of age and showed exceptional natural ability right from the start. He has the force to shift them but also gives them enough room so as not to unsettle them. Will work wide or close and is not afraid to squeeze them out of a corner or off a fenceline.

It has taken us decades to breed a dog like Max. Because of how well linebred he is, he will throw the qualities to his pups and we have big plans for him in our Stud over the next year. He has already bred many outstanding dogs including Noonbarra Jackaroo, a great young sire in the stud. His latest litter to Noonbarra Chloe was fantastic with the pups working at 7 and 8 weeks of age.

He has been mated over Noonbarra Lizzie, Noonbarra Jessie, Noonbarra Chloe, Noonbarra Valerie (twice), Capree Dyna, and now over Noonbarra Molly. His mating to Lizzie produced great Kelpies like Noonbarra Toby and Jackaroo, while his first mating to Valerie produced Noonbarra Gemma and his second mating produced Noonbarra Solo. His mating to Capree Dyna produced Sophie and Noonbarra Betje who is doing very well in Belgium, Europe. His mating to Jessie was terrific too but the demand was so high we didn't even get to keep a pup ourselves.

Price of Frozen Semen from Noonbarra Max is - $650 (Australian Dollars)

FROZEN SEMEN

We now have some semen stored from Noonbarra Max at a professional facility. See details on A.I. at bottom of page.

We also have discounts for customers buying multiple doses or a combination from different sires

GETTING YOUR FEMALE MATED

Please contact us as soon as you think your female has come on heat. About 80% of Kelpie females will mate on day 13 of their heat cycle. On one particular bloodline, we have seen a number of females appear to be ready as early as day 8 but that is unusual. With a very small number of females we have seen them ready to accept a male on day 16 or 17. We can only remember two that weren't ready until day 18. So as a general rule expect your bitch to be ready on day 13. [ from the first day of genitals being swollen or blood spotting]

The best idea, if possible, is to get your bitch to us as soon as possible after she comes on heat and leave her here for a week or so to be mated. If that is not possible then we would recommend you getting a Progesterone test around day 6 to 9 of her heat cycle. If you get this test too early then it comes up as baseline and the test doesn't tell the Vet anything, if you test too late you may miss the mating. The Progesterone level has to be rising.

Females who have been mated before are usually easier than first time females. You need to know as close as possible exactly when your female came on heat. Swollen genitals and blood spotting are the signs you are looking for.

If possible try to get a progesterone test before taking your female to a sire. We always do this with outside sires we go to, unless the sire is very close to where we live. A progesterone test is a blood test. The Vet takes a few drops of blood from the vein of your dog and sends it off to be tested. Results are usually back within 24 hours. Cost varies but we mostly have paid around $55 to $65 (2010) but some Vets might charge more. One Vet in Orange was charging $83.00 (2010)

There is also another test that uses a smear from your bitch put under a microscope. We have found these tests to be extremely unreliable and have had them done by a number of different vets over the years. We would not recommend them unless there is no alternative.

PROGESTERONE TESTS FOR MOST ACCURATE MATING

These days we would not travel to use a sire ourselves without getting a couple of progesterone tests first. For example, when we mated Noonbarra Sarah to Futura Ned in Victoria we got 2 tests done and mated her the night we arrived before going to a motel and then again next morning. No fuss and then able to return home. Too easy! If you are travelling any distance and have fuel costs, motels etc. it can be expensive if the mating doesn't work.

A progesterone test is a blood test. The Vet takes a few drops of blood and sends this to a pathology lab. Results come back within 24 hours but sometimes you can get an urgent test same day if you are lucky. Cost is around $60 a test. (2010).

You should know when your bitch has come on heat. Either swelling of the genitals or blood spotting. Progesterone readings of around 3.00 or 3.5 nanomoles per litre (nm/L) are not telling you much. These are base line readings and mean your female has not ovulated. The only thing you really know is that you haven't missed the mating. A reading of around 7nm/l tells you things are happening and from our experience it might take 4 or 5 days to get up to around 16nm/l. If the reading is around 16-18 nm/l then you are likely to get a mating about 2 days later. A reading above 15 nm/l (or 5ng/ml) means your bitch has ovulated. It takes 48 hours for the eggs to become fertile. This may not be exact and we are not veterinary experts in this field but from our experience of doing these procedures for over 30 years, that's about right. Your Vet would be able to advise you much more accurately. Some females will mate for a few days and some only for one day. Most will mate for 2 days or more.

Please be aware that nanograms per millilitre (ng/ml) is a different reading to nanomoles per litre (nm/l). Every now and then a Vet might give you a reading in nanograms (ng/ml), but most use nanomoles. To change from nanograms to nanomoles a rough calculation is to multiply by three.

Fresh semen can remain viable inside the bitch for between 3 and 6 days waiting for the eggs to become fertile so sometimes it is a handy backup to get a natural A.I if there are special circumstances. These would include a bitch having an unusual cycle, or a bitch that is at the point we expect a mating but it doesn't seem likely for some reason or the bitch is overly stressed by the male and becoming aggressive. We have been doing these procedures for over 30 years and on the rare occasions we have resorted to natural A.I. at the vets in most cases there has been a natural mating within 48 hours.

One of our own females a few years back, was on the end of day 18 before she would mate naturally, which is extremely unusual. (most females mate on day 13). This was her first mating so we didn't know what to expect. We got a natural A.I and a progesterone test done on her at the same time. When the results came back 24 hours later they confirmed she wasn't ready yet and she mated naturally at 10.30pm on day 18!

Except in the case of one female with medical reproductive problems (already known to owner), we have never missed a mating with an outside female that has come to our Noonbarra Stud for breeding that has had progesterone tests.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

Often we get customers who arrive and are ill prepared. They have no idea of when their bitch came on heat and haven't got a progesterone test and often the female hasn't been mated before. Some are very young females and have never had a heat cycle before. Many have already finished their heat cycle. Others have problems such as vaginal strictures or even infections preventing them from mating.

Additional fees (When applicable):

$50 general fee to cover our time, phone calls etc. if your female doesn't mate.

$10 a day Boarding fee. (Cleaning, feeding, kennelling etc.)

$60 each trip to any of the Vets in Orange. (Fuel and time). Fresh semen collection for overseas customers at Dubbo etc. is additional.

Additional costs such as progesterone tests, getting the Vet to do a natural A.I (Getting the semen inserted manually) checking for infection or blockages of the female etc. if there seems to be a problem, are only charged at cost. These costs, if needed, are usually around $50 or $60 extra.

All this may sound complicated but most services to bitches are not difficult at all and there are no additional charges or need to go to Vets etc. We have been doing this for decades and have advice and assistance from many reproduction & veterinary experts and only very rarely are there any hold-ups or complications.

USING FROZEN KELPIE SEMEN

SENDING IN AUSTRALIA:

Sending frozen semen within Australia is fairly simple but it needs to travel in a special container. This is usually hired from the A.I. company. There is a bond required to make sure they get it back as they are worth nearly $2,000. The semen is sent to your Vet. You need to make sure your Vet has a nitrogen holding tank on their premises. A lot do but some don't. Macquarie Artificial Breeders at Dubbo will verify viability of the semen before it leaves and if necessary, advise your Vet in carrying out the process.

The freight and handling costs for getting the semen to various Vets within Australia varies but the approximate cost all up for everything is usually around $1,200 - $1,500 for the semen, collection costs, freight, Vet handling fees, and hire of special container.

To get more semen will vary, but as an example, Semen from two different males to inseminate 6 females will cost around $2,500- $3,000.

As the frozen semen needs to be surgically implanted you will need to pinpoint exactly when your bitch has ovulated. To do this you will need to get a progesterone blood test from your female a few days after she comes on heat. You may need to repeat this blood test every second day in order to know exactly when your bitch has ovulated. Frozen semen does not survive long so you have to be 100% accurate. Fresh semen may survive for 5 days or so. You need to discuss the cost of getting these tests done as it varies from about $55 a test to over $80 at some Veterinary practices (2010). Your Vet will then tell you the exact day to bring your female in for insemination. As they put the semen directly into the uterus, a general anaesthetic is needed.

Semen is in straws or pellet form. You need 4 or 5 straws to inseminate each female successfully.

We charge $650 for the frozen semen from our sires (5 straws). Added to this is the cost of transport, container, A.I. company charges etc. It is always much cheaper, easier and better to bring your females to our Stud and have our sires mate them naturally.

SENDING KELPIE SEMEN OVERSEAS:

THIS IS EXPENSIVE!

Sending frozen semen overseas is more complicated than sending within Australia. This is only worthwhile as a serious investment. It is much cheaper to buy two puppies in some cases and get them imported than to import semen. The good news is that a lot of semen can be exported at the same time for almost the same freight and administration cost (excluding the actual cost of collection and semen cost). Look at inseminating a number of females and making an investment in the region of $10,000 to $15,000 for it to be worthwhile. To get one female in pup may cost around $4,000 or more and there is always a chance the female may not get in pup even with perfectly viable semen. It depends on your Vet's skills as well as the female herself.

If you purchase enough to do a number of females the cost per mating will reduce dramatically. Often breeders will work together and import dog semen to be shared. Of course you could import semen from a number of our sires at the same time and use it over a period of years. If you only want to mate one female then it would be cheaper to import a puppy or an adult.

In a lot of cases, countries have special requirements and the semen has to be done freshly with blood tests from the male and a health certificate done at the time they collect the semen. Obviously this cannot be done with sires that are deceased or are too old to produce viable semen. This process means 3 hours drive to and from Dubbo and takes two people to handle the sire as well as having a female on heat and takes all day to complete, so becomes expensive.

The semen needs a special container. This is usually hired from the A.I. company. Along with the hire fee, there is a bond required to make sure they get it back as they are worth around $2,000 or more. You could also buy your own tank if you want. The semen is sent to your Vet. You need to make sure your Vet has a nitrogen holding tank on their premises. A lot do but some don't. Macquarie Artificial Breeders at Dubbo will verify the semen before it leaves and if necessary, advise your Vet in carrying out the process.

The freight costs for collecting and getting the semen to various Vets overseas varies but is usually between $2,000 to $3,000. Added to that will be the cost of each batch of semen. There are substantial discounts for multiple batches sent at the same time.

You will need to get a progesterone blood test from your female a few days after she comes on heat. As 'frozen' semen does not live long after it is thawed, you may need to do a few of these tests over a number of days in order to know exactly when your bitch has ovulated. You need to discuss the cost of getting these tests done as it varies from Vet to vet. In Australia, about $50 a test but can be over $80 at some Veterinary practices. Your Vet will then tell you the exact day to bring your female in for insemination. As they put the semen directly into the uterus, a general anaesthetic is needed. The cost for this again varies quite a lot between different Vets. We stress the point again that this is very, very expensive, time consuming and complicated and is recommended only to customers wanting to mate a number of females.
